A natação em águas abertas é uma das modalidades esportivas que mais cresce no mundo. Inclusa no programa olímpico desde os jogos de 2008, as maratonas aquáticas vêm se difundindo bastante em nosso país, com enorme número de praticantes.
Além dos benefícios para a saúde e no desempenho físico a prática de natação em águas abertas permite uma total integração do atleta com a natureza.
Definições nas Regras da FINA – Federation Internationale de Natation
. Maratonas Aquáticas devem ser definidas como qualquer competição que ocorra em rios, lagos ou oceanos.
. Maratonas de Longa Distância devem ser definidas como qualquer prova em competições de maratonas aquáticas de até 10 quilômetros.
. Maratonas Aquáticas devem ser definidas como qualquer prova em competições de maratonas aquáticas com mais de 10 Km.
O treinamento para as provas em águas abertas normamente é feito em piscinas o que pode ser um problema, pois nadar no mar ou lagoa é bem diferente que na piscina. Contudo um bom programa de treinamento, com exercícios educativos e dicas para as provas em águas abertas podem tornar o treino em piscina muito proveitoso.
